My work uses found and mass produced materials like sewing patterns, paper napkins, book pages and doll parts. I’ve re-assembled these materials as sculptures that hang from the ceiling or protrude from the wall and spill into the gallery space. The hanging works spin and sway as the viewer moves around them. These works are made with human scale in mind, most are between 5 and 8 feet high. The materials are delicate, requiring careful assembly. Connecting these materials to ideas of repetitive labor is central to the works.
I am deeply interested in nostalgia as a constructed fiction—the idea that we selectively remember parts of the past while overlooking contradictions, inequities and discomforts. How I remember and relate to the past and how that shapes my understanding of the present is a constant theme in my work. These works focus on the idea that sewing, cooking, cleaning are “women’s” work. I see them as chores that have held women back for decades and continue to do so. By reassembling these symbols of domestic labor in ways that lift them, literally, from their original context. I free symbols of domestic life from their original context and invite you to reconsider them from a different perspective.
